Can a cylinder fit into a square? About data-driven in a holding with different businesses

In a multi-business holding, it is very easy to fall into the illusion of control.
One panel. Unified metrics. Comparison of businesses. Transparent reporting.
And it seems that the system has become understandable, structured and analyzed.
But data-driven management in a holding is not only about numbers. It is a constant work with opposites.

Standardization provides order. But context provides meaning.
Unified approaches to reporting allow you to see the system holistically. However, the same numbers do not mean the same nature of processes, risks or growth points.

Unification provides comparability. But it does not always provide an honest comparison.
Service business, production, retail or defense direction can be part of the same holding, but work according to different logic, pace and unit economics.

And common metrics can distort reality more than explain it.
It is necessary to constantly remember that the dashboard is a projection that does not equal reality. It can highlight the decision field, but this does not replace the need for managerial thinking.

Data-driven maturity in a holding is not an attempt to fit all businesses into one square, but the ability to see the system holistically, taking into account the peculiarities of its parts. Because in a multi-business holding, it is important to understand not only the separate effectiveness of each business, but also their mutual influence.

Where one business creates a reputational impact on another.

Where the strength of the brand strengthens trust in the entire group.

Where management decisions in one direction can change the dynamics of another.
And then data-driven is no longer just about numbers. It is about seeing the system of connections, influences and joint sustainability of businesses within the holding.
